4 Misconceptions You May Have About Abstract Art

After starting as a realist painter four decades ago, I've been an abstract artist now for over 15 years and I've discovered there are a lot of misconceptions about abstract art.

Here are just four ...

  1. Abstract art is too difficult to understand !

Abstract art can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of artistic ability or knowledge. It can be interpreted differently by each individual, making it a unique and enjoyable form of art.

It’s like learning a new language. I don't understand Mandarin but it's still a real language, I just haven't learnt it yet.

2. Abstract art is not real art -

Abstract art is an incredibly powerful and meaningful form of expression that can be used to explore complex emotions and ideas.

It requires skill and creativity to create, it is one of the hardest art forms to master and is an important part of the art world.

3. Abstract art is just for adults -

Abstract art is enjoyed by people of all ages, and can even be used as a tool for teaching children about color, composition, and other elements of art.

Abstraction allows the artist to freely explore the subject. Expressing colour, emotion and other complexities. Rather than painting exactly what we see, we can now delve deeper and also express thoughts, feelings and emotions through paint and the medium of abstraction.

4. “My child could paint that!”

Ummm, No they couldn’t lol!

While it's true, children are wonderful at expressing themselves and enjoy the process of painting and PLAY, the art of abstraction is based on a sound understanding of design elements and compositional rules, as well as maturity of thought.

Most abstract art actually comes from something in reality, be it an emotion, nature, landscapes, music, thoughts or stories about life etc. The list is endless.

As someone who started out as a realist painter four decades ago I can tell you that creating abstract art is one of the hardest art forms to master.

What's your thoughts on Abstract art? Is there a question or tips about abstraction you'd like to ask? I'll do my best to answer it here.

Thanks for reading and feel free to share this blog if you found it helpful.
